About
inbetweenspaces is a Brisbane based artist-run initiative that has a history of organizing and curating temporary collaborative exhibition projects in disused and transitory sites. Over the past two years, we have created unique opportunities for emerging artists to develop and exhibit works in in-between environments- in sites that are outside of art gallery spaces.
Brisbane is currently undergoing a major cycle of urban development with a significant number of spaces rapidly undergoing cycles of construction, destruction and restoration. These transitory spaces are often discarded and in these states offer very little to the wider community. We aspire to foster unique exhibition opportunities for site-responsive and site-specific visual art projects by challenging local, national and international artists to develop innovative works that respond to local environments. So far, all our projects have been self–funded; we work with a negligible budget and liaise with a wide range of community members outside of the arts sector- from real estate agents and property owners to businesses and councils, to negotiate space. Our projects have not focused solely upon exhibiting the artistic practices of the directors. When the directors have participated in artworks- as artists/curators/organizers, the projects have developed into collaborative, cross-disciplinary and hybridized- artist and ARI projects. These works have unfolded to critically engage with contemporary dialogues around collaborative practice.
inbetweenspaces is co-directed by three Brisbane based artists: Sarah Byrne, Danielle Clej and Ruth McConchie.
